Megan West: Being part of the KC team

I have now been a part of the KC Communications team for just over 2 lovely months and it has been great!

KC seemed like a tight knit workforce that were well integrated with the community and surrounding areas and it was hard to miss them on social media (Katrina the KC Twitter Queen) so I was thrilled when they offered me the position of Marketing Account executive.

Coming from an in-house marketing position based in Leeds city centre, client-side marketing and a daily commute to Huddersfield were all fairly new to me! However, on Monday 31st October, armed with Google Maps, I set off on the 26-mile trip to the KC Office in Lindley, to which I was greeted by a lovely box of Halloween chocolates and a little ‘welcome’ card from the team.

Throughout my first week I was really impressed with how eager Katrina and the team were to take me to client meetings and ensure I was in the loop from the get-go.

Although it was a lot to take in, there was no pressure whatsoever and it was more an opportunity for me to observe the B2C relationships that KC has with their clients.

Whilst I was familiar with many of the systems and processes the business uses, there was certainly a handful that I needed some time to get my head around.

Katrina and the team were more than helpful, answering my many questions, talking me through the processes and giving me the support that I needed.

As Katrina was jetting off to Thailand for the festive period we had our Christmas celebrations at the end of November. We made our way to All Bar One in Leeds for a cocktail masterclass session and some delicious food which gave me a lovely end to my first month with KC and to really get to know the team outside the office.

Over the last two months I have worked across all existing clients in one way or another, enabling me to really get to grips with the varied roles and responsibilities.

Here’s just a few:

  • Generating content ideas for clients and developing these ideas into blogs
  • Taking ownership of clients’ social media accounts, ensuring content shared is well suited and engaging, as well as creating/maintaining B2C relationships through online discussion
  • Assisted with the organisation processes involved in client events, including the fabulous Town Foundation Ladies Lunch and Huddersfield Community Trust Awards & Networking Evening
  • Attended awards ceremonies on behalf of clients
  • Writing various press releases that are sent out to all relevant contacts, optimising clients reach and publicity

Something that I have particularly enjoyed whilst at KC are the networking opportunities available and the people I have met. This has enabled me to build on my personal contacts within the industry whilst creating professional relationships with people from varying sectors.

Networking was not something I did at my previous role and I’ve surprised myself as to how much I enjoy it, I can feel my confidence growing over the weeks and I now feel able to freely chat amongst attendees at events!

In the coming months I will be developing ideas across social media, within marketing plans and looking for what great opportunities both we and our clients can jump on, as well as a number of blogs in the pipeline for KC.

With regards to my personal goals, my confidence has come on leaps and bounds whilst at KC and I am thoroughly enjoying learning something new every day.

My personal development and job satisfaction is really something that I know will continue to develop in this position and I’m very excited to see what 2017 will hold!
