As an engaged follower of KC Communications on LinkedIn, I instantly wanted to get involved when I saw that they were looking for work experience students. I popped Ellis an email, and the rest was history.
Personally, I was eager to gain insight into how a PR agency works, like KC Communications, to explore a PR career pathway – something that I have not yet looked into. Being an undergraduate marketing student at the University of Huddersfield, I thought it would be useful to gain some new work experience to apply the theory I’ve learnt to real life.
From the first day, the KC team welcomed me with open arms. I was assigned a schedule with tasks and guidance for each day.
We kicked the week off with a team meeting, discussing our individual tasks for the week with the opportunity for people to reach out to the team for some guidance.
Following this meeting, Abi and Frankie conducted a mock interview with me to find out more about me, my previous experience and my interview skills. We then discussed my interview answers to improve in the future, and we spoke further about my experience.
Throughout the week, I had various opportunities to expand my skill set with online digital marketing courses, and I found out more about myself and my learning style with personality quizzes. It was interesting to find out that, being an architect, I have the second rarest personality type in the world. With my strengths, including being independent, determined and versatile, I also learnt that I am very much a visual learner. Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerburg and Jay-Z have the same personality type as me too!
I also had the opportunity to experience two KC workshops on Client Services and Social Media training, which was great to see how the KC team has a huge focus on staff development and I learnt so much from these sessions.
Another exciting day during my week at KC was sitting in the team’s WIP Session; a day of brainstorming for KC’s current clients as well as new business opportunities. It was a super productive day and the team came up with loads of new ideas, which taught me so much about PR (the pizza was great too!).
The KC office is a great environment where ideas are constantly bounced off each other. As the KC team says, ‘No idea is a bad idea!’ which is a testament to their talent. I have had the opportunity to learn so much, not only about PR but also about myself.
If you are looking for work experience, I would definitely recommend working with the KC team as you are guaranteed to learn a field of new skills, both personally and professionally.
