Turbo-charging digital health innovation
Propel@YH is the Yorkshire and Humber’s first regional digital health accelerator and supports organisations from across the world to bring its innovative digital health solutions to the region’s patients and the wider health economy.
Commissioned by the Yorkshire & Humber Academic Health Science Network (AHSN), Propel@YH will provide its inaugural 2019 cohort with access to a structured course of support and advice aimed at helping to navigating the complex healthcare landscape and building an NHS-relevant business case, whilst enabling accelerated company growth and increased market presence.
Following a pitch event in mid-April, six businesses were selected to take part in the full 2019 cohort. They commenced the six-month programme in in May, which includes:
- Masterclasses covering human-centred design, clinical safety by design, understanding procurement in the NHS and other key topics.
- Digital innovator surgeries, a rolling programme to include pitch development with input from industry experts.
- Access to expert partner organisations including NHS providers and commissioners, primary and secondary care organisations, academic institutions and industry representatives.
- Developing a patient-centred, co-designed approach to their digital solution with input from patient representatives.
- Signposting and introductions to organisations who may be able to provide financial support.
- Other business essentials, such as expert mentoring and dedicated one-to-one support, covering topics such as marketing, legal, finance and more.

“DigiBete is already making a huge difference to the lives of both families living with type 1 diabetes and health care professionals, but our time on Propel@YH will really help us to identify how we can strengthen DigiBete’s processes. We are so thankful to have been given this opportunity.”
Maddie Julian, DigiBete
“We’re delighted to be selected for Propel@YH! Our staff has spent many years at a senior level in the NHS, so we’re keen to introduce disruptive innovation into this highly-complex organisation. With an ever-increasing demand and reduced resources, Propel@YH will help in accelerating the adoption of digital health tech solutions – we’re very excited to part of this, and to be working with the accelerator’s team.”
Dr Amjid Mohammed, Healthcare Engineering
“We’re delighted to be selected for the first Propel@YH cohort, and look forward to participating in the programme. The aim of integrating AI into clinical histopathology and improving the way histopathology services are delivered is challenging, but with the support of Propel@YH and the rest of the Northern Pathology Imaging Co-operative led by Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, we are confident we can make a positive difference for NHS patients and staff.”
Dr Derek Magee, HeteroGenius
“It’s wonderful to be selected for Propel@YH programme. We believe that, thanks to the expertise and connections of the partners, we will be able to scale up our software for diabetes management and turn it into a standard for patients, clinicians and the NHS.”
Dr Eduardo W Jorgensen, Medicsen
Medicspot is passionate about improving lives in communities by using transformative remote consultation technology. We are pleased to be part of the Propel@YH accelerator cohort, which will give us an opportunity to scale up with the NHS and offer patients better access to our unique technology. Our diagnostic device-assisted telehealth solution has the potential to offer patients more convenience, clinicians a trusted remote consultation tool and the NHS a cost-effective population health management solution.
Rahul Kapoor, Medicspot
“We’re absolutely thrilled to be selected for the first Propel@YH cohort, and excited at the prospect of participating in the programme. It’s our belief that we can contribute to improving health outcomes for all, working alongside academics and clinicians, focused on personalisation, prediction, prevention and people-centred healthcare. It’s incredibly rewarding that the people behind Propel@YH recognise the opportunity to facilitate our aspirations to co-create ‘tech for good’, and help us on our journey.”
