By September 15, 2017 September 18th, 2017 Stories

It’s Friday again, which means it’s time for our weekly round-up of all things social!

Are you an avid Snapchat user? Do you track your Bitmoji avatar and like showing it off? You’ll love the new AR feature! Keen to video-chat to a group of friends with cool effects? Facebook’s got your back. We even have a treat for all the corner shops (the so-called Bodega’s) out there!

Dig in and stick with it ‘till the end – believe me, you won’t regret it!

Snapchat will allow you to place your Bitmoji avatar in the real world

Snapchat has introduced its newest feature – as of yesterday users can place their customisable Bitmoji avatars in the real world.

Say what now?!

The feature is available through the app’s rear facing camera, along with the beloved dancing hot dog. The social media platform hopes that introducing the 3D Bitmoji integration, it will cement its position as the leading player in AR technology. We can’t wait to see what they think of next!

Facebook introduces Bonfire to keep users from fleeing to other platforms

The app is Facebooks most recent attempt to connect its users. Even though Facebook’s Messenger app already allows you to group chat with friends, setting one up has proved to be a bit too much and sent users away to apps such as Houseparty.

This is where Bonfire steps in. The app has a video-first intuitive design and allows users to express themselves using effects. It also makes it easy to screenshot and share pictures from within the app.

As it stands, the app is only available from the Danish App store. Let’s see if it catches on!

Proof that not all start-up ideas are an instant hit – even when they come from Google’s ex-employees

When I first heard about this new start-up, all I knew was that it was created by two ex-Google employees. I quickly discovered the new, seemingly genius idea: to place interactive pantry boxes full of non-perishable goods in convenient spots so you can just grab and go without making the trip all the way to the corner.

Sounds great, right? Well, Twitter didn’t think so…check out the video below and let us know what you think of the Bodega idea!

Pinterest surpasses 200k monthly users

Yesterday marked a significant milestone for Pinterest. The online scrapbook has surpassed 200 million users every month. They now reach a global audience, with the biggest boost coming from users from outside the US – more than 50% of Pinners live outside America. And if Pinterest’s users were a country, they’d be the 7th largest in the world!

To mark their growth, Pinterest has announced it will be introducing a bunch of new features. Keep up with their blog to find out how to get early access to the latest from Pinterest and snag an invite to test out their newest ideas.

Last but not least, the police officers who broke the internet

This week’s Social Shoutout wouldn’t be complete without the trio of police officers who broke the internet. The Gainsville Police Department employees probably didn’t expect such a viral reaction to a seemingly innocent post…

The post amassed over 182,000 comments, and nearly 277,000 shares – mainly from women stunned by the policemen’s amazing looks.

Off the back of the post’s popularity, Gainsville Police Department has started a donation platform for those who wish to help assist Gainesville-area victims of Hurricane Irma.

For those wanting to see more from officers Nordman, Hamill and Rengering (the last of whom is still single…wink wink), they have promised to make a calendar – our guess is they will get the Sarasota Police Department to help out on that one!

And if that wasn’t enough, they have now been charity-challenged by the Knoxville Police Department, who decided to play dirty and add a dog:

Charity has never looked better!
